What Does VAMC Stand For?

VAMC stands for Veteran Administration Medical Center, which provides medical care to eligible veterans. Depending on your location, VA Medical Centers offer various specialty, primary, and rehabilitation care services. 

Do Veterans with VA Disabilities Have to Use VA Medical Centers for Care?

No, veterans with VA disabilities are not required to use VA medical centers or VA hospital locations for care. You can receive medical care from private healthcare providers as long your VA benefits cover the care. 

For instance, most veterans are covered by VA Community Care, allowing eligible veterans to receive healthcare services from private providers in their communities pending whether they have been enrolled in VA health care since on or before August 1, 2014, or be eligible to enroll as a recently discharged combat veteran. You must also meet at least one of the following criteria. 

• You live more than 40 miles from a VA healthcare facility
• You need to travel by plane or boat to the nearest VAMC
• Your local VA medical center informed you need to wait more than 30 days for an appointment from the date clinically determined by your physician
• You live in a state or US Territory that doesn’t have a full-service VA medical center
• You face unusual burdens when traveling to the nearest VAMC based on medical conditions, environmental factors, or geographical challenges
