If you’re the surviving spouse, child, or parent of a service member who died in the line of duty—or the survivor of a Veteran who died from a service-related injury or illness—you may qualify for a tax-free monthly benefit called VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).

In this Insider’s Guide, VA disability expert Brian Reese explains who’s eligible, current DIC pay rates, how to apply, and insider tips and strategies to help you win your DIC claim faster.

Let’s begin!

What Does Dependency and Indemnity Compensation Mean?

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation—what we call “DIC”—is a tax-free monthly benefit paid by the VA to certain surviving family members of a service member or veteran.

If your loved one died in the line of duty, or later from a service-connected illness or injury, DIC is the VA’s way of recognizing that sacrifice.

It’s an earned benefit—a financial lifeline meant to help surviving spouses, children, and in some cases parents, after the loss of someone who served our country.

Basic VA DIC Eligibility Explained

You may be eligible for VA DIC if your loved one:

  • Died while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive-duty training, or
  • Died from a service-connected injury or illness, or
  • Did not die from a service-connected condition but was eligible for VA compensation at a totally disabling (100%) level for a qualifying period before death.

Who is Eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)?

Surviving Spouses

You may be eligible if both of the following are true:

You lived with the Veteran continuously until death; if separated, you were not at fault for the separation; and

One of these applies:

  • You married the Veteran within 15 years of discharge from the period of service during which the qualifying illness/injury began or worsened, or
  • You were married to the Veteran for at least 1 year, or
  • You had a child with the Veteran.

Remarriage exceptions: You can receive or continue to receive DIC if you remarried on or after December 16, 2003 at age 57+, or on or after January 5, 2021 at age 55+.

    Evidence Tips for Spouse Claims

Submit evidence showing one of the following is true:

    • The service member died while on active duty, ACDUTRA, or INACDUTRA; or
    • The Veteran died from a service-connected illness or injury; or
    • The Veteran didn’t die from a service-connected condition but was eligible for compensation for a totally disabling service-connected disability for a qualifying period.

If relying on the “totally disabling” rule, the rating must have been:

    • For at least 10 years before death; or
    • Since release from active duty and for at least 5 years immediately before death; or
    • For at least 1 year before death if the Veteran was a former POW who died after September 30, 1999.

    Surviving Children

You may qualify if all are true:

    • You are unmarried, and
    • You are not included on a surviving spouse’s DIC, and
    • You are under age 18 (or under 23 if attending school).

Note: Children adopted out of the Veteran’s family can still qualify if all other criteria are met.

    Surviving Parents

You may qualify if both are true:

    • You are the Veteran’s biological, adoptive, or foster parent (served in a parental role before last entry into active service); and
    • Your income is below VA’s limit for Parent DIC.

See the Parent DIC rate table and this Parent DIC FAQ.

What are the DIC Pay Rates?

Qualified survivors receive tax-free monthly compensation.

The amount depends on your survivor category and eligible add-ons.

Check the official, current rates here:

The spouse table includes the base monthly amount and added allowances such as the 8-Year Provision, Aid & Attendance, Housebound, and per-child additions—plus a transitional amount for the first two years when there’s a child under 18 in the home.

Example: How VA DIC Pay Is Calculated

Your total benefit depends on your survivor category and any eligible add-ons.

For a surviving spouse in 2025, the base monthly rate is $1,653.07.

On top of that, you may qualify for additional amounts:

    • 8-Year Provision: +$351.02 if the Veteran was rated totally disabled for at least 8 continuous years before death and you were married during those years.
    • Aid & Attendance: +$409.53 if you require help with daily living activities.
    • Housebound: +$191.85 if you’re substantially confined to your home.
    • Dependent Child (under 18): +$409.53 for each eligible child.
    • Transitional Benefit: +$350.00 per month for the first two years if you have at least one child under 18.

Example scenario: A surviving spouse with two children under 18, eligible for both the 8-Year Provision and Aid & Attendance, would calculate their monthly DIC as follows:

    • Base pay rate of $1,653.07
    • $351.02 (8-Year Provision)
    • $409.53 (first child)
    • $409.53 (second child)
    • $409.53 (Aid & Attendance)
    • $350.00 (Transitional Benefit)

Total during first two years: $3,582.68 per month.

After the transitional benefit ends, the monthly total would be $3,232.68.

How to Apply for VA DIC

The application you use depends on your survivor status:

    Ways to File

Should You File an Intent to File?

    Yes!

Submitting an Intent to File (VA Form 21-0966) protects your effective date while you gather evidence, which can increase potential retroactive (back) pay.

VA DIC Evidence Checklist (Start Here)

    • Veteran’s DD-214 and service records
    • Death certificate listing cause of death
    • Marriage certificate / proof of common child
    • VA rating decision letters (if relying on total disability criteria)
    • Medical records linking cause of death to service (or to a service-connected disability)
    • For Aid & Attendance/Housebound add-ons: relevant medical forms (e.g., VA Form 21-2680)

See VA’s official guidance on evidence: Evidence to support DIC, Survivors Pension, or Accrued Benefits.

Pro Tips to Win Your DIC Claim Faster

    1. Lock your date early: Open an Intent to File to protect your effective date and potential back pay. Here’s why it matters: Why the VA Intent to File Is Super Important
    2. Tell a clear evidence story: Organize service records, medical evidence, and relationship proof. Don’t assume VA will connect the dots.
    3. Use medical opinions when needed: If the cause of death isn’t obviously service-connected, get a strong nexus letter. See a nexus letter example
    4. Leverage the PACT Act: If previously denied, reapply now if the condition is now presumptive. Review the list: Updated PACT Act Presumptives
    5. Claim every add-on you qualify for: Aid & Attendance, Housebound, per-child additions, and the 8-Year Provision are commonly missed. Learn A&A details here: How to Get Aid and Attendance Approval and practical uses: What Can A&A Money Be Used For?
    6. Don’t go it alone on appeals: If denied, choose the right lane and bring new and relevant evidence. Start with this decision guide: How to Appeal a VA Disability Claim Denial and compare lanes: Higher-Level Review vs. Supplemental Claim.

Common Mistakes That Delay or Deny a DIC Claim

    • Missing the link (nexus) between cause of death and service
    • Overlooking remarriage exceptions for spouses 55+/57+
    • Forgetting dependent add-ons (A&A, Housebound, per-child, transitional)
    • Not appealing with new and relevant evidence (and in the best-fitting appeal lane)

VA DIC: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long do VA DIC benefits last for a surviving spouse?

Generally for life—unless you remarry before the qualifying age exceptions.

You can continue DIC if you remarried on/after Dec. 16, 2003 at age 57+, or on/after Jan. 5, 2021 at age 55+.

Does VA DIC affect Social Security?

    No.

DIC is tax-free and does not reduce Social Security benefits.

Can children over 18 receive DIC?

Yes, if they’re under 23 and attending school, or are permanently incapable of self-support (“helpless child”).

    How does Parent DIC work?

Payments are based on your countable income and number of eligible parents.

    What’s the 8-Year Provision?

An added monthly amount may be payable if the Veteran was rated totally disabling (100%) for at least eight continuous years before death and you were married to them during those years.

What about VA DIC under the PACT Act?

If the cause of death may be related to toxic exposures (e.g., burn pits, Agent Orange), the PACT Act may help.

Survivors can apply now under the PACT Act or reapply if previously denied.

    Conclusion & Wrap-Up

VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is more than a monthly benefit—it’s the nation’s way of honoring that sacrifice and recognizing the lasting impact on your life.

If you’re a surviving spouse, child, or parent, you’ve already given more than most will ever understand.

You shouldn’t have to carry the financial burden as well. DIC benefits are earned through service and sacrifice—they are your right, not a favor.

With expanded eligibility under the PACT Act and recent VA updates, more survivors now qualify for benefits they may have been denied in the past.

But knowing you’re eligible is just the first step.

Success comes from filing strategically, submitting strong evidence, and ensuring you claim all benefits and add-ons available to you, such as Aid & Attendance, Housebound, and the 8-Year Provision.

    Here’s the bottom line:

    • Don’t wait—file your claim or submit an Intent to File today to protect your effective date.
    • Be thorough—gather complete documentation, medical evidence, and relationship proof before filing.
    • Know your options—if denied, understand your appeal lanes and be ready to submit new and relevant evidence.

    Your loved one’s service mattered.

    Your sacrifice matters.

Now it’s time to make sure you receive every benefit you’ve earned—fully, fairly, and without delay.
