In this blog, we’ll explore VA disability loss of grip strength and whether you could qualify for a VA rating based on your grip strength.

Understanding the VA’s evaluation process for grip strength issues is pivotal for veterans seeking compensation for service-connected disabilities affecting their hands and upper extremities.

We’ll look at the assessment criteria and the significance of detailing the connection between diminished grip strength and other VA-rateable conditions when pursuing VA disability benefits and compensation.

Let’s begin.

VA DISABILITY LOSS OF GRIP STRENGTH

VA Disability Loss of Grip Strength

VA Disability Loss of Grip Strength

You could qualify for VA disability for loss of grip strength if it’s linked to a service-related condition like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). However, it’s important to note there is no specific VA disability rating for loss of grip strength.

Additionally, if the loss of grip strength equates to the loss of use of your hand, then it can be rated separately.

Note: If the loss of your grip strength is just a diminished or weakened hand caused by CTS (or related conditions), it can’t be rated separately (because of the avoidance of pyramiding).

How the VA Evaluates Loss of Grip Strength

The VA evaluates the impact of hand and arm impairments, including diminished grip strength, through specific criteria outlined in the Loss of Use of Hand or Foot (38 CFR § 4.63).

If you can’t use your hand at all, you may qualify for VA Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)—specifically SMC-K.

If the loss of grip strength is caused by another VA-rateable condition, it can’t be rated separately (pyramiding). However, you can pursue a VA rating for a VA-rateable condition that is causing your loss of grip strength.

VA Disability for Loss of Grip Strength Due to Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a common condition among veterans, can directly impact grip strength and hand functionality, and it’s possible to get a VA rating for CTS.

CTS occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist within the carpal tunnel.

As a result, individuals might experience tingling, numbness, weakness, or a diminished grip on the affected hand.

Veterans experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome due to their military service could qualify for VA benefits and compensation.

Can You Get VA Disability for Carpal Tunnel?

Yes, if you have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, you may qualify for VA disability benefits if the symptoms are severe enough to interfere with your ability to work–and if your CTS is due to your service. See our CTS guide below!
