Table of Contents
Summary of Key Points
- VA Disability Claim Steps: The VA disability claim process has eight main steps, each meant to help the VA review your evidence, develop your claim, and make a decision as fairly and accurately as possible from submission through notification.
- Timelines for Each Step: Each step has an estimated timeframe. Early stages, like claim receipt, may take about 3 to 4 days, while later stages, such as decision notification, may take about 7 to 8 days. The longest step is usually Gathering of Evidence, which often takes about 30 to 36 days because the VA may need to obtain medical records, service records, exam results, and other supporting documents. Overall, the average time to decide a VA claim is about 75 to 90 calendar days from submission to decision.
- Factors Affecting Processing Times: Several factors can affect how long a claim takes, including the type of claim, the number and complexity of the conditions claimed, whether the VA needs to schedule Compensation & Pension exams, and how long it takes to gather additional evidence from you or outside sources.
- Checking Claim Status: You can check your VA claim status online at VA.gov or by calling 1-800-827-1000 to speak with a VA representative. This helps you stay updated on the progress of your claim throughout the process.

The VA Disability Claims Process Explained
STEP #0: Intent to File
In Step #0, you notify the VA that you plan to file a disability claim—it’s kind of like sending an RSVP for your benefits.
You can submit an Intent to File online, by phone, or by mailing the proper form to the VA.
Once the VA receives your Intent to File, it can establish your potential effective date for back pay, as long as you submit your completed claim within one year.
What is the Step 0 VA Claim Timeline?
This means the VA has officially recorded your Intent to File and protected your potential back pay date. This step can take as little as 1 day, and you then have up to 1 year to submit your completed claim.
STEP #1: Claim Received
In Step #1, the VA notifies you that they have received your disability claim.
If you file your disability claim online, you will usually get an on-screen confirmation message right after you submit it.
If you mail your application, the VA will typically send you a letter confirming receipt of your claim. Your claim status may also appear in your VA.gov account shortly after it is entered into the system.
What is the Step 1 VA Claim Timeline?
This means the VA has officially acknowledged your disability claim and entered it into their system. This step usually takes about 3 to 4 days.
STEP #2: Under Review
In Step #2, a Veteran Service Representative (VSR) reviews your claim to make sure all necessary information is included.
If no additional evidence is needed right away, your claim will move to Step #3. This is more likely if you submitted a Fully Developed Claim (FDC), which is generally the better option when possible.
Standard claims can take longer, especially if the VA must spend more time developing the evidence.
What is the Step 2 VA Claim Timeline?
During this stage, the VA reviews your claim to make sure all required information is included and that they understand the specifics of your case. This step typically takes about 5 to 6 days.
STEP #3: Gathering of Evidence
The VA evidence-gathering phase is usually the longest step in the VA claim process.
In Step #3, the VSR may do the following:
Request evidence from you, healthcare providers, government agencies, or other sources.
Obtain medical records and service records.
Schedule Compensation & Pension (C&P) exams if needed.
Review newly received evidence before sending the claim forward for a rating decision.
Note: If more evidence is needed during this phase, your claim may move back and forth between Step #3 and later steps. That is a normal part of the process and usually not a reason to panic.
What is the Step 3 VA Claim Timeline?
The VA gathers the medical, service, and other supporting records needed to decide your claim. They may also request additional information or schedule you for a C&P exam. Because this development work can take time, this step usually takes about 30 to 36 days.
STEP #4: Review of Evidence
In Step #4, all required evidence has been received and is under review.
If the VA determines that more evidence is still needed, the claim may return to Step #3.
This back-and-forth is a normal part of the VA disability claim process. If the VA needs something from you, they will let you know.
What is the Step 4 VA Claim Timeline?
The VA carefully reviews all the evidence gathered to assess the validity and severity of your disability claim. This stage typically lasts about 9 to 11 days.
STEP #5: Preparation for Decision
In Step #5, the VA reviews your claim in full and begins preparing the formal decision.
This includes reviewing your application, medical evidence, supporting documents, lay statements, buddy letters, and any C&P exam results.
The VA then prepares the rating decision and supporting documents.
What is the Step 5 VA Claim Timeline?
At this point, the VA is preparing to make a decision based on all the evidence in your file. This step usually takes about 8 to 10 days.
STEP #6: Pending Decision Approval
In Step #6, the VA completes a final review of the proposed decision.
This may involve a second-level review to ensure the decision is accurate and complies with VA laws and regulations.
What is the Step 6 VA Claim Timeline?
A senior VA reviewer checks the prepared decision for accuracy and completeness before it is finalized. This step normally takes about 7 to 8 days.
STEP #7: Preparation for Notification
In Step #7, your VA decision packet is prepared for mailing.
This packet includes details about the outcome of your claim, including your disability rating, effective date, monthly compensation amount, and appeal options if applicable.
What is the Step 7 VA Claim Timeline?
The VA prepares your decision packet and final notification materials. This step typically takes about 6 to 7 days.
STEP #8: Decision Notification Sent
In the final step of the VA claim process, the VA sends you a decision packet by U.S. mail with the final details of your claim decision.
You may also see the decision reflected online before the letter arrives in the mail.
For updates or questions about your VA disability claim status, you can call 1-800-827-1000 and ask to speak with a VA representative.
What is the Step 8 VA Claim Timeline?
The VA sends your final decision notice, which explains your rating decision, benefits awarded, and next steps if you disagree. This final step usually takes about 7 to 8 days.
Total VA Claim Timeline
From submission to decision, a typical VA disability claim takes about 75 to 90 days on average, although some claims may move faster or slower depending on the complexity of the case, the type of claim, and whether additional evidence or C&P exams are required.
How Long Does a VA Claim Take Right Now?
Right now, a typical VA disability claim takes about 75 calendar days from submission to decision, though some claims move faster and others take longer depending on the facts of the case.
The encouraging news is that the VA has become much faster and more efficient over time, processing claims at a record pace, completing more than 3 million compensation and pension claims in FY 2025, and cutting the backlog to under 100,000 claims for the first time since 2020.
Even so, timelines still vary based on how much evidence the VA needs, whether you filed a Fully Developed Claim, and how many conditions or C&P exams are involved in your case.
