Top 30% VA Disability Benefits—Explained!

1. VA Disability Compensation

Based on 2025 VA disability pay rates, a single veteran with a 30% VA disability rating (and no dependents) receives over $537 per month in tax-free compensation. Additional payment is provided for eligible dependents, and benefits are adjusted annually for cost of living (COLA). Reaching the 30% threshold also allows you to add dependents—such as a spouse, children, or parents—to your claim for increased monthly compensation.

2. VA Disability Compensation for Dependents

If you meet both of the following requirements, you could receive additional VA disability compensation for your child, spouse, or parent:

  • You qualify for VA benefits, and
  • Your combined VA disability rating is at least 30%

By adding a dependent, you may be able to receive a higher “benefit rate,” commonly referred to as a compensation payment.

Spouses and dependents may also be eligible for healthcare and education benefits.

3. VA Healthcare Benefits

Veterans with a 30% VA disability rating may qualify for the VA’s second-highest healthcare benefits ranking — “Priority Group 2” of eight total groups, which means you qualify for comprehensive VA healthcare services.

Benefits for Priority Group 2 include:

  • No medication copays at VA Medical Centers for inpatient stays (not including copays for all outpatient medications)
  • No copays for inpatient or outpatient care
  • Free medical care for treatment of service-connected disability
  • Screening exams for health risks related to military service (e.g., Agent Orange Registry exam)
  • Preventative care (e.g., smoking cessation or weight reduction services)
  • Hospice care
  • Healthcare travel reimbursement program (i.e., reimbursements for veterans and caregivers who travel to and from VA-approved medical appointments)

4. Hearing and Vision Care

Veterans with a 30% VA disability rating are eligible to receive hearing and vision care through the VA, including:

  • Routine vision and hearing exams
  • Preventative tests
  • Eyeglasses
  • Hearing aids

5. Life Insurance

Veterans with service-connected disabilities can apply for low-cost Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife) or Service-Disabled Veterans’ Life Insurance (S-DVI), which offers guaranteed acceptance of whole life coverage up to $40,000.

The cost of S-DVI or VALife insurance coverage varies based on your age, plan type (e.g., term or permanent), and level of coverage.

6. Burial Benefits

The VA offers burial benefits to eligible veterans, including a gravesite in a VA national cemetery, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate—all at no cost to the family.

7. Federal Hiring Preference

If you’re a disabled veteran who is in the job market, you may be interested to learn that with a 30% rating, you are eligible for veterans’ preference during the federal hiring process. You’ll receive additional points on your civil service exam or application, which can result in a higher overall ranking than that of applicants who aren’t veterans.

VR&E services include:

  • Job training, education
  • Employment accommodations
  • Resume development
  • Coaching services for job seekers
  • Business start-up skills services
  • Independent living services (for veterans unable to work in a traditional work environment)

(FAQs) Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I have a combined disability rating of 30%, but my conditions are not individually rated at 30%?

You can still qualify for 30% VA disability benefits if your total combined rating equals 30%, even if no single condition is rated that high.

Once I receive a 30% VA disability rating, will I be eligible for additional compensation for dependents?

Yes. The VA provides additional monthly compensation for dependents, such as your spouse and children. This extra support is provided to help mitigate the impact of your service-connected conditions on your family.

How will my 30% VA disability rating affect my VA healthcare benefits?

Receiving a rating of 30% will result in a Priority Group 2 assignment, giving you priority access to VA healthcare services and a wide range of healthcare benefits such as lower copays and access to vision care, hearing aids, and burial services.

Which factors indicate that I may qualify for an increased, 30% or higher VA disability rating?

You may qualify for a higher VA disability rating if your symptoms have worsened, you have developed other conditions or symptoms, you need more intensive ongoing treatment, or your disability has progressed to the point of limiting your ability to work.
