Army Veteran John Lopez spent nearly 40 years struggling with undiagnosed PTSD—unaware he was entitled to VA disability compensation and benefits.
Since joining the VA Claims Insider Elite Program in 2024, he has increased his VA rating from 0% to 100%, finally finding answers for decades of confusion—and a renewed sense of purpose to help other veterans discover what he wishes he’d known all along.
The Soldier
In 1983, 20-year-old John Lopez left his family’s jewelry business on Long Island to join the US Army. After basic training at Fort Jackson and AIT at Fort Eustis, Virginia, he deployed to Germany for 18 months with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

His unit was stationed at Merrell Barracks—nicknamed “Gangster Hotel,” a former German SS headquarters that was taken over by the US Army following WWII. The Red Army Faction was active at the time, and John recalls the constant danger of attacks.
“If a car backfired,” he said, “everyone jumped. We partied every night like it was our last—because we never knew.”
John’s unit maintained more than 90% readiness at all times. After Germany, he transferred to Fort Hood before separating in 1986—unaware of how deeply his time in service would affect him.
Four Decades of Struggle
After leaving the Army, John returned to the jewelry business he’d once tried to escape—but something inside him had changed, and he couldn’t understand why.
“I suffered from something,” he said. “I knew I wasn’t the same anymore, but I didn’t have a label for it.”
The undiagnosed PTSD showed up in ways he couldn’t explain. “If my wife dropped a broom, the sound of that snap went right through me,” he said. “We were always on alert, walking on eggshells.”
John and his wife struggled financially through much of their 26-year marriage. “There were times we were counting change on the table just to buy food,” he said. “I carried a lot of anger and negativity back then—probably tied to my depression and PTSD.”
Worst of all, he didn’t know help was available. “I didn’t even know VA disability benefits existed,” he said. “It was like a military secret.”
The Wake-Up Call
That all changed in 2024 when a friend mentioned VA Claims Insider. The friend had never used the service himself but knew others who had success. John was skeptical—he’d been disappointed before—but decided to give it a chance.
After joining the Elite Program, John was paired with his Veteran Coach, who guided him step-by-step through the claims process and helped him prepare for his first medical review in January.
During that review, the examiner uncovered what had been missing for decades. “They told me I had anxiety and depression,” John said, “and then the examiner said, ‘You actually have PTSD.’ For the first time, I had a name for it.”
The Breakthrough
John filed his first claim in mid-January and another in May. This time, he approached each claim strategically, guided by his coach’s experience and preparation.
Since joining the Elite Program at VA Claims Insider, John has increased his VA rating from 0% to 100%.
“It feels like vindication,” he said. “For so long, I thought serving was a mistake. But this is life-changing.”
The financial relief was huge for him and his wife—but so was the understanding that came with it. “It drew a map of my life,” John said. “Everything suddenly made sense.”
A Mission to Help Others
Today, John can’t help but notice other veterans wherever he goes. “Now I walk around and I can almost tell who the veterans are,” he said. “I wonder if they know about VA Claims Insider. I wonder how their life is going, how it would change their life—how it changed mine.”
He’s already working to help his friend Roger, who he feels indebted to for telling him about VA Claims Insider. “I keep telling him, ‘You gotta reach out; I’ll help you pay for it,’ you know, cause he’s struggling with money, too.”
He also helped his cousin, a retired police officer and combat veteran, start the VA claims process. “The only reason he found out about that is because I told him, ‘You should go to the VA, you’re a veteran, you’re entitled to this.”
His Message to Fellow Veterans
John’s advice is simple and heartfelt: don’t wait. “A lot of veterans don’t know they’re entitled to these VA benefits,” he said, “It’s almost like it’s hidden under a rock.”
He often thinks about what could have been different. “I told my friend, ‘I wish we’d known about this when we got out.’ He said, ‘Yeah, I wouldn’t have been homeless for a while if I had.’ Hearing that hit me. His life would’ve been different—and so would mine. Now here we are, in our sixties, finally getting the help and disability we earned.”
For veterans who think they’ve been out too long or don’t qualify, John’s story proves otherwise. At 63, nearly 40 years after separation, he went from 0% to 100% with the right guidance and support.
“You guys are here to help veterans,” John said, “and I’m here to help my friend.”
And that’s how the mission continues—one veteran at a time.
