  • The estimated VA disability pay chart 2024 for each school child are shown separately. They are not included with any other compensation rates. All other entries on this chart reflecting a rate for children show the rate payable for children under 18 or helpless. To find the amount payable to a 70% disabled veteran with a spouse and four children, one of whom is over 18 and attending school, take the 70% rate for a veteran with a spouse and 3 children and add the rate for one school child.
  • Where the veteran has a spouse, who is determined to require Aid and Attendance (A/A), add the figure shown as “Additional for A/A spouse” to the amount shown for the proper dependency code. For example, veteran has A/A spouse and 2 minor children and is 70% disabled. Add $134.03 for additional for A/A spouse to the rate for a 70% veteran to calculate the total amount.

What is the Effective Date of VA Disability Rates 2024?

What is the Effective Date of VA Disability Rates 2024

2024 VA disability rates will be effective December 1, 2023.

Disabled veterans could see a 3.1% COLA increase on their January 1, 2024 VA disability payment.

Brian Reese from VA Claims Insider estimates a reasonable 2024 COLA range between 2.5% and 3.5%.

For example, if you were previously getting $1,000 per month tax-free, a 3.1% VA pay increase is $31, so a veterans VA disability compensation pay in 2024 would go up to $1,031 per month.

What is the Estimated 2024 VA Disability COLA?

What is the Estimated 2024 VA Disability COLA?

Final 2024 VA disability rates will be based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report of September 2023 inflation data.

VA Disability Benefits Expert Brian Reese has revised his estimate and now projects a 2024 COLA increase of 3.1%.

According to Mary Johnson at the Senior Citizens League, “Based on February 2023 inflation data, the 2024 COLA looks like it will be below 3% and could fall into the 2% or even lower range by the third quarter if that 12-month average continues to decline.”

How is the 2024 COLA Increase Calculated?

How is the 2024 COLA Increase Calculated?

The 2024 Social Security COLA is based on the percentage increase from the highest third quarter average CPI-W recorded from 2022 compared to the average CPI-W for the third quarter of the current year (3rd quarter 2023).

If the CPI-W triggers a COLA this year, the COLA becomes effective in December 2023, and is payable in January 2024.

Social Security payments and 2024 VA disability rates always reflect the benefits due for the preceding month.

In some years, however, the CPI-W does not increase.

In fact, sometimes a decrease has been recorded (e.g., 2010, 2011, and 2016).

In those years, no COLA was payable as required by law, which means the increase is zero.

Benefits don’t get reduced to mirror the lower cost of living and are held to the previous period’s levels.

The Social Security COLA can never be negative, even during times of a decreasing price index.
