How to Use the 2025 VA Disability Compensation Rates Above to Find Your Monthly Payment

Here’s a quick explanation of how to use the 2025 VA compensation rate tables to find your monthly payment:

Step #1. Find Your Basic Pay Rate:

Look at the table for your specific disability rating (e.g., 30%, 40%, etc.). Match it with your dependent status (e.g., spouse, children, or parents). This will give you the basic monthly payment.

Example: A Veteran with a 30% disability rating and a dependent spouse (but no children or parents) will now receive a basic monthly rate of $600.97.

Step #2. Check for Additional Amounts:

If you have additional dependents (like more children) or your spouse receives Aid and Attendance, you might be eligible for more money. Look at the “Added Amounts” table for these extra payments.

Example: If a Veteran has a 70% disability rating, a spouse, and three children under 18, they would start with the basic rate for a spouse and 1 child, which is now $2,017.49. Then, add $73.80 for each additional child (2 more children), plus $137.35 for a spouse receiving Aid and Attendance.

Step #3. Calculate Your Total Pay:

Add up your basic rate and the extra amounts to get the final monthly VA disability payment for 2025.

Final Total VA Pay Rate Calculation Example:

  • Basic rate: $2,017.49
  • Second child: +$73.80
  • Third child: +$73.80
  • Spouse Aid and Attendance: +$137.35
  • Total: $2,302.44

Important Notes:

  • The VA disability pay chart 2025 for each school child is shown separately. They are not included with any other pay rates. All other entries on this chart reflecting a rate for children show the rate payable for children under 18 or helpless. To find the amount payable to a 70% disabled veteran with a spouse and four children, one of whom is over 18 and attending school, take the 70% rate for a veteran with a spouse and 3 children and add the rate for one school child.
  • Where the veteran has a spouse, who is determined to require Aid and Attendance (A/A), add the figure shown as “Aid and Attendance (A/A) Spouse” to the amount shown for the proper dependency code. For example, the veteran has an A/A spouse and 2 minor children and is 70% disabled. Add $137.35 for additional for A/A spouse to the rate for a 70% veteran to calculate the total amount.

What is the COLA Increase for 2025?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced the 2025 COLA increase on October 10, 2024, which came in at 2.5%, as expected. Disabled veterans with a VA rating of 10% or more will see the 2025 COLA increase beginning on their January 2025 VA disability compensation payment.

How Does the VA Determine My Disability Rating Percentage?

The VA determines your disability rating percentage using the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD) to evaluate and rate over 900 VA disabilities. These ratings range from 0% to 100% in 10% increments and reflect the severity of your disability based on your current symptoms and how they impact your work, life, and social functioning. Each condition you claim is assigned a rating under a specific diagnostic code. If you have multiple disabilities, the VA uses a combined rating system to calculate your overall benefit amount.

How Can I Calculate My Combined VA Rating?

After the VA makes a decision on your disability claim, they will send you a rating decision letter that will detail each condition’s individual rating and your total combined VA rating. Your total combined VA disability rating is the rating percentage used to find your payment rate in the chart. You can quickly calculate your combined VA rating using our free VA disability calculator.

How Do I Increase My VA Disability Rating?

You can apply for a VA disability rating increase by submitting a new VA claim online for free at VA.gov along with medical records for each condition you’re claiming. Your medical evidence should show how your symptoms have worsened over time and now meet the higher rating criteria for each condition.

Is VA Disability Compensation Tax Free?

Yes, VA disability compensation pay is tax free at both the federal and state levels. This tax-exempt status ensures that the benefits you receive are not reduced by income taxes, allowing you to fully utilize your disability compensation. Do My Dependents Qualify for Extra VA Disability Pay?

Dependents do not receive VA disability payments directly. However, if you have a combined VA disability rating of 30% or higher, you may qualify for additional monthly compensation for your dependents. This additional compensation can significantly increase your overall monthly VA disability payment. Dependents who may qualify for this added benefit include your spouse, children, and, in some cases, dependent parents. The VA disability pay chart 2025 above reflects these adjustments, ensuring that your compensation is calculated with dependents.

How Do I Search and Find a VA-Accredited Representative?

A VA-accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO), claims agent, or attorney can represent you with filing a claim or an appeal. Click here to find and appoint one of these accredited representatives to help you with your VA disability claim.
