VA Disability Guide: Why I Wrote The Definitive VA Benefits Guide…
Dear Fellow Veterans,
So, there I was…
Unable to continue serving in the military due to a plethora of mental and physical conditions.
After a tough deployment to Afghanistan in 2011, I knew my time was up.
It crushed me to my core.
And it nearly killed me.
Why?
Because I was stuck, frustrated, underrated by the VA, and lost my purpose after leaving the military.
“These dang civilians just don’t get it,” I said to myself.
And I did what many Veterans do when faced with mental and physical pain.
I self-medicated with alcohol and drugs, which led to a downward spiral of epic proportions culminating in a divorce in 2017 and resignation from federal civil service in 2018.
Truthfully, things were so bad, there were times I thought about ending my own life.
Please understand THERE IS A WAY OUT … I found it … and you can, too.
God put you here on earth for a reason and your life matters.
YOU MATTER.
It was October 2012, and I was just a couple weeks away from taking off the uniform of the United States Air Force for the last time.
I was told to attend a DoD mandated “Transition Assistance Program” class, more commonly known as “TAPS.”
Speaker after speaker pummeled us with information that didn’t make any sense.
I had no idea how to turn any of this useless information into action.
One speaker came from the VA in Boston, MA to tell us about VA benefits.
230+ slides later I was more confused than before we started.
Was I eligible for benefits or not?
Could I file a VA disability compensation claim or not?
How do I even start the process?
I had no idea and neither did anyone else.
Look, I’m not the brightest bulb on the porch, but I’m not stupid either.
Truth was, no other transitioning military member in the room knew how to get benefits…we were all confused.
We literally looked around the room at each other and laughed together.
That was my introduction to the VA…
So much for taking care of Veterans.
Prior to this presentation at TAPS, I had never heard of the VA—I didn’t even know it existed.
It would be 6 years later before I realized I didn’t have the VA benefits I deserved by law.
It would be nearly 10 years later before I became an EXPERT in all things Veteran Benefits, and it took me over 10,000 hours researching, writing, teaching, training, and equipping others to get the benefits they deserve, too.
Now the good news is you can avoid my costly mistakes and avoid 10,000 hours of researching and learning…
