Yes! Many veterans can qualify for hearing aids from the Veterans Administration (VA).

Unfortunately, your military service puts you at risk for severe hearing loss, requiring the need for hearing aids. However, the VA understands this risk and offers valuable resources for the hearing impaired.  

This quick guide will cover eligibility for VA hearing aids, how to order them, and how to get replacement hearing aid batteries.

Does the VA Supply Hearing Aids for Free?

Yes, many veterans are eligible to receive hearing aids from Veterans Administration health services as part of their benefits package. 

Eligibility for VA Hearing Aids

Most veterans with service-connected hearing problems, like tinnitus,  may qualify for VA hearing aids.  

The VA offers free hearing aids to the following veterans: 

  • Those with any service-connected disability due to their military service  
  • Former prisoners of war (POW)
  • Purple Heart recipients 
  • Those rated permanently housebound or in need of regular aid and attendance 
  • Those with hearing impairment resulting from diseases or a medical condition for which they are getting VA care or disability 
  • Those who have hearing impairment severe enough that it interferes with their ability to participate actively in their own medical treatment or daily living 

Note: The VA requires you to receive a hearing evaluation by a state-licensed audiologist to determine whether you need hearing aids or other hearing assistive devices. 

How to Receive VA Hearing Aid Benefits

The VA offers free hearing aids, but you must first register at the health administration/enrollment section at a VA Medical Center. You can continue to receive free hearing aids if you maintain VA eligibility for care. 

You also need the following documents when you register: a copy of the Veteran’s DD214, driver’s license, and health insurance (if available).  

You can enroll to receive hearing aids in one of the following ways: 

  • In person at any local VA facility  
  • By mailing completed Form 10-10EZ to the Medical Center of your choice (Don’t forget to sign your form; otherwise, it can’t be processed) 

After registering, you can schedule an appointment at the Audiology and Speech Pathology Clinic for a hearing evaluation. The audiologist will make a clinical determination on whether you require hearing aids or hearing-assistive devices. 

How to Order Hearing Aid Batteries

You can request new hearing aid batteries by one of the following methods: 

By Mail

  • Use the blue VA Form 2346, Request for Batteries and Accessories card/envelope received with your initial or latest battery order. 
  • Complete the form and mail it to the Denver Acquisition & Logistics Center (DALC) at the address provided on the form:

If you do not have the blue VA Form 2346, use the automated phone option to contact the DALC (see below) or contact your local VA audiology clinic. 

Via Telephone

Call the Denver Acquisition & Logistics Center (DALC) at 303-273-6200 

  • Press 1 for the Automated Battery Reorder System 
  • The system will ask for your social security number and zip code 
  • You can then select which authorized batteries to re-order 

Online

Visit the eBenefits Web site at:  www.ebenefits.va.gov 

Note: Once ordered, your batteries should arrive within 7-10 days. It’s recommended you order extra batteries when you only have enough for about 30 days.

Yes, the VA covers maintenance, repairs, and replacements when needed, if you remain eligible for the hearing aid benefit. Follow-up appointments and adjustments are also generally included.
